Business Heroes

Shy and Mighty Society

Nadia is a kickass business coach for shy or self conscious entrepreneurs. We initially met in the earlier stages of my business. I spent the first year learning by trial and error, wondering if I’d be able to make it a success. I then joined Nadia’s group (back then it was The Actionista Academy) and only after that began seeing some progress. With Nadia’s continuous help and support, I’ve thrived not only as a person but as a business!

I’m now a part of Nadia’s new group, The Shy and Mighty Society, which has been yet another key asset to me and my journey. Nadia describes The Shy and Mighty Society as ‘a squad of shy people committed to achieving success in a way that feels good and works with their shyness’. I love being part of the shy squad! Head to Nadia’s website at shyandmighty.com to find out more and to see all of the other amazing things from Nadia including a podcast and program for shy children.

Laura from Worditude

Laura is someone I not only consider a business hero, but a friend who constantly inspires me. Laura is the founder of Worditude, a digital copywriter and an expert in her field. She helps online-based businesses write their own copy that converts strangers into superfans. She’s been a saviour in terms of moral support and pushing me out of my copywriting comfort zone.

Her copywriting courses and resources are absolutely essential for your online business, and they have certainly helped me and my clients to launch some amazing websites! Laura is currently taking sign ups for Write Your Website, launching January 2021, an intensive group program with 12 days of copy coaching from the copy queen herself!

Andrew and Pete

Andrew and Pete are keynote speakers, authors and founders of Atomic, and incredible training program and community for small businesses dedicated to helping them grow their business in a smarter way. No more hustle… ‘Do less. Focus more. Grow quicker.’

I attended Atomicon last year where I met lots of people in person who I’ve only ever seen online and made tons of new business friends! I’m not a hugely social person and attending events like this terrifies me, but after Atomicon, I immediately booked for next year because I had never been so inspired about my business! Fancy joining me next year?

Business Books

Being Boss

Kathleen Shannon & Emily Thompson

A beautiful and inspiring book with tons of activities and guidance to help you ‘be boss’ and create a business (and life) you love. It’s not a boring business book – it’s truly fun and eye-opening, helping you to create success in a way that feels good to you.

The Middle Finger Project

Ash Ambirge

The Middle Finger Project is the ultimate no bullshit, no nonsense guide to success. Not only is it an addictive, entertaining read full of sass and character, but it’s the perfect manifesto for erasing your self doubt and transforming your dreams into reality. You can tell by the title it’s going to be a fun book to read!

Profit First

Mike Michalowicz

I switched from a sole trader to a limited company in 2020 and that brought a whole new set of financial challenges and confusion. Profit First helped me to regain some control and really understand the numbers again! The idea of Profit First is so simple but has worked magic for me.

Our Toolbox

Notion

Notion is our ‘business hub’. It’s an all-in-one system that blends everything you need into one. Notes, to do lists, plans, wikis… Using Notion you can create your own system tailored to you and your team to help you manage your business.

Flodesk

Flodesk is a fairly new email marketing platform that is quite simply, beautiful.

What makes it different to other email marketing platforms is that you can have unlimited *everything* at the same monthly rate, it’s super easy to use, and you can design stunning emails that are exciting for your subscribers to open.

It’s an awesome platform if you’re looking for something user friendly, but are still wanting advanced features.

QuickFile

When I first started my business, I used QuickFile for my accounting software. It was easy to use and free for small businesses – even as the business grows, the pricing is super affordable.

It also meant I was organised from day one and when everyone else was stressed when it got to the tax return deadline, I was fairly relaxed as I’d been using QuickFile to keep track of everything!

Canva

Photoshop isn’t always accessible or user friendly without some expertise, and that’s where Canva comes in. Canva is a free graphic design platform that’s easy to use to create beautiful graphics. There’s also a Pro subscription for additional functionality like uploading your own custom fonts. Even we, as designers, find ourselves opting for Canva time and time again because it’s so easily accessible for our clients’ needs.

Starling

We’ve recently switched to Starling Bank and I’m so impressed. Everything is managed through an easy to use mobile app. We get notifications when we spend and when we get paid so we’re always on top of our finances, the reports in the app keep us on track, and it integrates easily with my accounting software. I also use ‘spaces’ to organise profit, tax, wages and expenses separately (and they each have pretty little pictures – it’s the simple things…).

Later

Later is an Instagram marketing platform that allows you to visually plan your social posts, schedule and publish automatically to save you time and make running your Instagram so much easier! We find it a lot simpler to plan our content using Later as we can drag and drop our social posts into the platform, easily see what looks good and what needs to be rearranged and then schedule to post at a time that suits our followers!

Toggl

Toggl is a time tracking app that allows you to track your time across your business so you can see how much time you’re spending on different tasks, where you’re most efficient and keeps track of billing hours for clients. We use it to track everything to improve our workflow!

Envato Elements

Envato Elements is a subscription service for digital assets such as stock photos, fonts, graphics, templates… It’s one monthly fee for a huge variety of downloads. As designers, we use it daily and I particularly love that they’ve now paired with Twenty20 to offer even more stock photos that are natural, beautiful and not obviously stock-y!

Favourite Podcasts

Business Anchors

Business Anchors is one of my favourite business podcasts. Dan and Lloyd Knowlton share business advice, stories and experience in a way that’s hilarious and relatable. I often listen to this with my headphones while I’m working and get regular strange looks from my husband when I laugh out loud!

The Limitless Life Experience

Suzy talks about impact, wealth and transforming yourself and your business in short bitesize episodes perfect for a motivational boost. There are also plenty of longer interviews with truly inspiring people. Listen to Suzy’s podcast and you’ll feel like you can take on the world!

She Means Business

The She Means Business Show is an empowering and inspirational podcast with stories from female entrepreneurs and from Carrie on how they’re creating the business and life of their dreams. I’ve had so many a-ha moments and reassuring realisations while listening to the real-life experiences on this podcast. Carrie has taught me that it’s ok to not have everything figured out.

The Simple Business Show

I love simplicity and I’m always striving to make things simpler. Nesha has the same idea – business doesn’t need to be hard, and you don’t need to be doing all the things. Nesha’s podcast teaches service based business owners how to ditch the overwhelm and simplify their entire business.

Lore

A couple of non-businessy ones now… I love listening to podcasts while I’m working and Lore is one I listen to a lot. The tagline for Lore is ‘Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction’. Each bitesize episode tells a dark and mysterious historical tale. I’m often telling my family about weird and crazy things I’ve learnt in this podcast.

Biographics

Biographics began as a YouTube channel and now they release episodes as a podcast too for more convenient listening. Each episode explores the life of someone who has changed the world (for better or for worse!). It focuses on the lives of interesting and wildly varied people like Prince, Blackbeard and Roald Dahl.
